experience would be of the greatest value to the University of Hong Kong in any schemes for re-organisation that may be under consideration. Mr. Sloss's academic qualifications are outstanding and his fitness for residence in the East is evidenced by the fact that he has suffered no serious illness or incapacity during his stay in the climate of Rangoon, a climate not dissimilar to that of Hong Kong•
The shortage of candidates at the present time is one of the results of war conditions and exists not only in respect of this vacancy but also in respect of other appointments. If the Univer- sity of Hong Kong were prepared to offer Mr. Sloss the appointment for five years he would during that period be able to go a long way towards carrying out the re-organisation which, the Committee were led to believe, is now under contemplation. At the end of that period a successor would be less difficult to find than it is to-day. The Committee strongly recommended that the appointment should be for a period of five years, with one period of leave during the lustrum.
If appointed, Mr. Sloss would be able to arrive in Hong Kong some time in October, but he would prefer to reach the Colony at the end of that month.
Copies of the applications of the other candidates will follow by ordinary mail, together with a statement of expenses incurred by this Bureau in connexion with the appointment.
Yours faithfully,
(Signed) W.B.Brander,
Secretary
